FROM THE DIRECTOR:

In this time of joy and reflection, I would like to express best wishes to you from all of us at the Ukrainian Museum-Archives and thank all who helped to make the past year such a success.  Here are just some of the highlights of 2006:

  • With the help of a $200,000 grant from Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, we opened our new archival building;
  • With the help of a generous grant from the Gund Foundation and donations to our Curator Fund, we hired a full-time professional, Danylo Dmytrykiw;
  • For the first time in our history, we were open on a daily basis:  Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • The UMA featured two terrific exhibits in 2006 in the new building:  antique embroidery and works by Alexander Archipenko works, including two busts and a set of 10 lithographs, all of which are currently on display;
  • We upgraded our web site (www.umacleveland.org) with colorful and informative on-line exhibits;
  • Through the advocacy of Senator Mike DeWine, we won a $250,000 grant from HUD for Phase Two of our development and expansion;
  • With the support of Senator Spada and Representatives Conway Kilbane, Trakas and Patton, we won a $100,000 grant from the Ohio Capital Budget for Phase Two of our development and expansion;
  • We installed a high density shelving system in the archival building;
  • With the help of more than 40 volunteers, we moved our vast collection of books and periodicals to the archival building;
  • Over the course of 2006, we welcomed several delegations from Ukraine, along with the Ambassador, Dr. Oleh Shamshur;
  • We received individual grants and donations each exceeding $5,000 from several foundations, as well as a good number of our members;
  • We now have nearly 300 dues paying members who together contributed over $25,000, almost doubling the amount in 2005.

2006 was a great year for the UMA and we’re looking forward to 2007 to begin the oral history project, begin major cataloguing our collection and move into Phase Two of our capital planning process.  So, regardless of when you celebrate or how, I would like to wish you a joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at the UMA!
