UMA Ukrainian Easter-Egg "Pysanka" Competition

The Ukrainian Easter-egg "pysanka" is famous the world over as an ancient, original and exceedingly interesting phenomenon of Ukrainian folk art, and has served as an "ambassador" of Ukrainian culture among non-Ukrainians, esp. here in the United States. This being the case, it is important for us Ukrainians to support those in our community who practice this important art, and to promote the preservation of authentic motifs and styles of traditional Ukrainian "pysanky". It is also important that we acknowledge those artists who have gained a true mastery of the writing of traditional Ukrainian "pysanky" and recognize them for their achievements in this field. It is with these goals in mind that the Ukrainian Museum Archives (UMA) of Cleveland is announcing its

First Annual UMA Ukrainian Easter-Egg Competition.

A jury, the members of which are yet to be determined, will judge all entries and determine awards*. First prizes of $250.00, Second prizes of $100.00, and Third prizes of $50.00, will be awarded in the following categories:

1. Reproductions of traditional, documented antique "pysanky" from any of the ethno-historical regions of Ukraine (e.g., Hutsul Region, Bukovyna Region, Polissia Region, Lemko Region, Boiko Region, Kyiv Region, Poltava Region, Chernihiv Region, Podillia Region, etc.) Note: Please include all known information regarding "pysanky" submitted in this category, e.g., village/region of origin, name of the particular "pysanka" design or pattern, and how you first saw or became acquainted with this particular antique design (Did you discover it in a museum collection? Was it published in an album of antique "pysanky" patterns? Has it been passed down through your family?, etc).

2. "Pysanky", the composition of which is based on the designs/motifs of the folk traditions of a particular region of Ukraine. Note: Please include the name of the region of Ukraine on which the designs/motifs of the submitted "pysanky" are based.

3. "Pysanky", the composition of which is designed according to the writer's own fantasy, but based on ornamentation found in traditional Ukrainian folk art, regardless of medium.

(*The Ukrainian Museum Archives reserves the right to not award a particular prize based on the jury's consensus that such a decision is warranted.)

This competition is open to all who practice the art of Ukrainian Easter-egg writing regardless of their age, nationality or any other factors; however, ALL entries must be the personal work of the individual submitting them. A $5.00 entry fee must accompany each "pysanka" being submitted to the competition for judging, along with the contact information (name, address, telephone, email address) of the person entering his or her "pysanka", and each entry must be marked as to which category it is being submitted for judging. All submitted "pysanky" automatically become the property of the Ukrainian Museum Archives.

All "pysanky" submitted for judging must be emptied and dried, and delivered to the Ukrainian Museum Archives (1202 Kenilworth Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44113) no later than 2:00 pm Saturday, March 17th, 2007, to be eligible for inclusion in the juried competition. The UMA is not responsible for entries damaged/lost in shipping or arriving late. Judging and presentation of prizes will take place at the Ukrainian Museum Archives on Saturday, March 31st, 2007 at 1:00 pm. If you have any questions regarding this competition or the rules & regulations governing it, please send an email to Staff@umacleveland.org, or call (216) 781-4329.

Ukrainian Ambassador Visits the UMA

The Ukrainian Museum-Archives was honored to welcome the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Dr. Oleh Shamshur, on Friday, August 25, 2006. In brief remarks introducing the ambassador, UMA Director Andrew Fedynsky outlined his career accomplishments and noted that Dr. Shamshur, as ambassador to Washington, has one of the most important diplomatic posts in the Ukrainian government. Addressing a sizable group of UMA members, friends and dignitaries that included Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, County Treasurer James Rokakis, Councilman Joseph Cimperman and Director of the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, Howard Maier, the Ambassador congratulated the community on preserving such a valuable repository of Ukrainian culture and pledged his cooperation in developing links with academic and cultural institutions in Ukraine. Over the course of the evening, Ambassador Shamshur personally greeted nearly every participant, posed for photographs and impressed everyone with his friendliness and insights into history and politics.
